Low cost airline Ryanair, have taken out prominent ads in the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian newspapers apologising for previous adverts, which referred to EasyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou as “EasyJet’s- Mr Late Again.”

In the past, the two budget airlines have used adverts knocking each other, but today, Ryanair have been forced to issue a grovelling apology. The advert, which has been funded by Ryanair uses large format printing stating the airline’s “Retraction and apology to Sir Stelios Haji-Iannou.”

The Guardian ran the advert with a picture of the Easyjet boss, with the statement from Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary written underneath.

Ryanair’s ‘libellous’ print adverts, which were previously printed in the papers, had depicted Sir Stelios as a Pinocchio figure, implying he was withholding information about his airline’s flight delays.

The final line of the full page advert, which apologises ‘unreservedly’ for the remarks, said that Sir Stelios could not be held personally responsible for the airlines decision not to publish their updates on time performance.

Ryanair have agreed to pay Sir Stelios’ damages and legal costs to settle the libel claim. The airline and Mr O’Leary have also stated that they will not publish the advert again.

Sir Stelios told Fresh Business Thinking: “It is not very often that someone as arrogant and as powerful as O’Leary is forced to apologise to someone else in public and in writing. I took this legal action to protect my reputation. I am not a liar and that statement was libellous.”

The damages are expected to be donated to Sir Stelio’s charity foundation.

A garden centre owner has been told to remove a sign he erected more than half a century ago because it does not have planning permission.

Aberdeenshire Council, told Swailend Nurseries owner Mike Duncan to remove the wooden signage because it is distracting passing motorists.

The sign, which stands on the side of the A947, has been in place since 1957 and directs green fingered enthusiasts to the plant nursery. Mr Duncan appealed the ‘ridiculous’ decision to the Scottish Government, but lost. He has now been given eight weeks to take down the sign.

Mr Duncan was cited in The Scotsman as saying: “They are saying it distracts drivers. The council contacted me and a man came round and said I had to remove the sign within seven days. They said it was an advert, but it just gives directions.

“I thought it was ridiculous so I appealed to the Scottish Government, but they have upheld it.”

A spokeswoman for Aberdeenshire Council said that Mr Duncan did not have permission to erect the sign as it does not comply with regulations.

“The location of where the sign was placed posed a potential distraction to users of the A947. We are pleased that the Scottish Government have agreed with us on this matter,” she said.

The wooden sign was initially put up by Mr Duncan’s brother Harry, 88 in 1957. The original sign rotted away, but it was replaced with an exact replica.

“There has always been the same sign in that bit. The funny thing is that I applied for permission for the sign years ago and was told that no-one knew who the patch of land belonged to. The council then told me I owned the bit of land since the sign had been there for so many years,” explained Mr Duncan.

Mr Duncan said his business would suffer as a result of removing the sign. “If the sign is not there, how is anyone supposed to know where we are? The sign will stay there until the eight weeks are up,” he added.

Croydon-based print business Discount Displays have expanded their printing capabilities with the UK's first eco-friendly HP Designjet L25500.

After the successful installation of the HP Scitex FB500 printer, Croydon-based print business Discount Displays has also taken delivery of the smaller HP Designjet L25500 with HP latex inks, complementing the larger machine and expanding their printing capabilities.

Giles Fletcher, General Manager says, “As an early adopter of this green technology we have taken a few months testing new media and fine tuning the machine to give the sort of quality output our clients have come to expect”

Fletcher continues, “We found that we were not only helping to save the environment, but we were able to substantially reduce the printing cost and pass the savings on to our customers. There is no doubt that sustainable printing is the way forward, there seems to be no down side. Over the past three years we’ve done a lot of research, we’ve looked at UV options and low solvents. I was at the point of saying there’s nothing on the market to meet our objectives and then HP released their latex ink machines. The print quality is superb, durability and UV stability is great and there’s a wide range of flexible medias available.”

Investment in this new technology moves Discount Displays towards their goal of being one of the most environmentally responsible printers in the market. Fletcher adds “The latex printers are being complemented with a range of materials such as recyclable banner PVC and display equipment like bamboo banner stands to offer customers a complete green option.”

He concludes “Our customers love the fact that when their graphics are delivered there are no solvent fumes as the latex print is totally odourless. the colour vibrancy was of a standard we’d never seen before. The high production speed is down to the way it moves the media through, showing that HP has truly researched and delivered on what their customer wants.”

The decision was made by Cardiff Council following a meeting with the public protection committee, during which professionals from the private and public hire taxis trade gave their views.

According to the story in The Guardian, the request for the vehicles to be display proper signage came from a public taxi provider. The Hackney Carriage Association told the meeting of a problem in which private hire cars pick up people that haven’t pre booked in Cardiff. However, one representative said that clients did not want signs on their cars, as customers hire them for their discreet service.

Gareth Owens, the director of Dragon Taxis was representing Premier and Tiger taxis. He is cited as having said: “We are equally required to provide a certain standard of service by the council, but we are totally against any signs.

“There’s a proportion of our drivers who have invested in expensive vehicles because they work for a high class customer. When you go to pick up Simon Cowell from Cardiff Airport, he doesn’t want a sign on his door.”

Whilst the committee felt there was not enough evidence to support the claim that private hire taxis were picking up passengers who had not previously booked, they did agree that signage should be displayed on the cars, stating it would be useful for some members of the public.

The exact wording of the signs is yet to be agreed, but it is thought the total cost for producing them will be £4,500.

Road signs have been erected directing motorists to a new hospital in Bristol, which doesn’t open for another two years.

The signage, which has been put up near Hengrove Park, gives directions to a new minor injuries unit at South Bristol Community Hospital, but the spot is currently a building site, as the hospital is not due to start receiving patients until 2012.

When the hospital extension does open, it will offer those in South Bristol diagnostic tests and give access to therapy services, close to their homes. The centre will also provide urgent care to those with minor illnesses and injuries that need immediate treatment. Some residents will also be able to attend scheduled appointments with consultants and specialists at the centre.

One resident, who did not want to be named, told the Bristol Evening Post of his concern that someone in urgent need of help could drive to the site, only to find that there is no hospital there, wasting time that could have been used driving to Bristol Royal Infirmary.

“I thought it was utter stupidity to have hospital signs for a building site. If someone didn’t know the area or what was going on they could follow the signs and end up at the locked estate. It could be unsafe and is not good all round common sense,” he said.

Bristol City Council have issued an apology for the error and said the signs were meant to be covered up until 2012. The local NHS said the signs were put up now because a college which is on the site is due to open in September, however the council have arranged for the signs to be covered until the building is officially opened.

James Easey spokesman for Bristol City Council admitted that having the hospital signs visible had been an oversight.

“We apologise for any confusion this has caused over the last few days,” he said.

Derry City Council have erected signage across the city to help enforce new legislation which bans drinking in public.

The new alcohol bye-law means the city council can prosecute offending drinkers reported by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), as well as issuing a maximum fine of £500.

The signs, which state that it is an offence to drink alcohol in a public place, warn boozers of the fine they could face, if caught breaking the bye-law. The signs have been erected in council parks and other areas which are particularly prone to people drinking alcohol in the streets. They have also been put up in areas renown for anti social behaviour.

Damien Mc Mahon, the City Secretary and Solicitor for Derry City Council, told the Londonderry Sentinel: “This new by-law has greatly increased the number of designated streets and public places in the Derry City Council local government district where the consumption of alcohol is prohibited.

“This legislation forms part of our work to reduce on-street and underage drinking. The relationship between on-street drinking and anti-social behaviour is well established and the result of such incidents can be devastating not only for individuals but for the entire community and city in general,” he added.

New legislation was also introduced earlier this year in an attempt to tackle underage drinking in the area. Underage drinkers can now be prosecuted if they are persistently found to be possessing or consuming alcohol in a public place.

New powers allow the PSNI to confiscate all alcohol regardless of whether the container is open from young people and those under 16 years of age, who can also be taken home by police if it is suspected that they have been drinking.

Fashion label Diesel’s latest poster campaign has been banned, being labelled ’offensive’ and encouraging of anti-social behaviour.

One of the adverts for the clothing chain, showed a young woman climbing a ladder and lifting her top to flash at a security camera. In the other, the model was seen to be taking a photograph down the front of her bikini bottoms, while a lion is prowling in the background.

Both posters use large format printing to carry the cryptic caption ‘Smart May Have The Brains, But Stupid Has The Balls. Be Stupid, Diesel.’

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said they had already received 33 complaints about the ads and that the posters were likely to cause ’serious offence’ to adults.

The two adverts, from the same campaign, have already featured in Grazia and Dazed and Confused magazine. They escaped the ban due to the fact they were unlikely to be seen by children and because both publications included material covering sexual themes.

The Italian fashion brand defended their campaign and were cited in The Telegraph as saying the posters ‘portrayed a very strong and unexpected image of femininity’. They added that the image with the security camera ‘tackled society’s preoccupation with 24/7 camera surveillance.’

However, the watchdog disagreed, stating the images were unsuitable to appear as posters because they could lead to copycat behaviour and breach rules covering responsible advertising and decency.

The ASA told The Daily Mail: “We considered that the image portrayed socially challenging actions that might be attractive to younger consumers who would be interested in the youthful and edgy fashion range and might encourage behaviour that was anti-social or irresponsible.”

The ruling by the ASA means the adverts are banned from appearing in poster form again.

The campaign called Face Equality by the Changing Faces charity, aims to tackle prejudices against people with disfigurements.

As part of the campaign, 200 posters will be displayed on Cardiff buses for two weeks. The posters will feature photographs of children with different types of disfigurement and through the use of large format printing, the public are challenged “not to judge them based on their facial appearance.”

The campaign is being backed by Falklands War veteran, Simon Weston. Mr Weston is a former Welsh Guardsman who received serious burns during a bombing attack on the Sir Galahad, during the conflict in 1982.

He believes that society’s obsession with beauty makes it difficult to raise awareness of issues such as facial disfigurement and said that most people are unaware that nearly one million people in the UK had serious facial disfigurement.

“What it’s about and what I’m supporting is to say: ‘Don’t judge people on what they look like,’” he said.

Mr Weston, was awarded an OBE in the 1992 Queen’s Birthday list for his charity work, he said images of perfection in modern society formed part of the problem.

“We base out stereotypes on beauty, magazines and footballers wives. It’s rare to see hugely overweight or plain or ordinary faces on television. We see them on soaps like Coronation Street but it’s hardly the norm.”

He said the campaign was about encouraging people to give those with disfigurements “a fair crack of the whip.”

A competition described as ‘tongue in cheek’ that offered entrants the chance to win a free holiday has been referred to the police as a potential hate crime, according to The Drum.

The billboard signs offered people the chance to win a free holiday to whichever country lifted the World Cup. The ‘Anywhere But England’ campaign was promoted across a shopping centre in Edinburgh with numerous signs plastered in the mall corridors. They’ve since been removed after a Scot said the adverts were racist.

According to The Scotsman, the man who made the complaint said: “I went to do some shopping in Sainsbury’s and was confronted by this banner… It was very in your face. I was quite offended – it’s racist.”

However, a spokesperson for the mall said the ‘Anywhere But England’ slogan referred to holidaymakers’ desire to holiday somewhere exotic. They claim it has nothing to do with the England football team. “We’re sure we speak for the majority of Scots by wishing England all the best in the World Cup,” they added.

This is just one in a number of stories about products displaying the ‘Anywhere But England’ slogan have been removed. Earlier this week HMV stopped promoting the line, but said they would continue to sell the products until stock runs out.

South of the border, England fans have retaliated with their own slogan; SNP – Scotland Not Playing.

A Lothian and Borders Polices spokesman said the force were aware of an incident “regarding an allegation of an offensive slogan used to publicise a competition run by an Edinburgh shopping centre.”

He said it had been recorded as a hate crime incident “as per national guidance on the recording of hate crime. However, no further action will be taken at this stage.”
