Road safety campaigners have criticised a new billboard campaign, featuring model Kelly Brooke naked.

The new adverts, which were launched last week, show the brunette in nothing but a pair of Reebok’s new ‘Reetone’ trainers. The poster has filled billboards at busy junctions and traffic hot spots around the UK and has been labelled as a ‘deadly distraction’ by campaigners.

Driving safety experts at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) have blasted the posters, arguing that the billboards will certainly cause serious and possibly even fatal accidents, as male drivers take their eyes off the road to get a better look.

Reebok advertisers appear to be undeterred by a previous poster printing scandal, which angered road safety campaigners, in 1994. When Wonderbra launched the infamous ‘Hello Boys’ billboard campaign, dozens of road accidents were attributed to male drivers, who had been distracted by underwear model Eva Herzigova.

Research carried out by Canadian scientists found that the number of accidents rise by nearly 50 per cent, after advertising billboards were erected at busy junctions, which highlights the dangers of roadside distractions.

Peter Rodger, Head of Driving Standards at IAM told The Daily Mail: “The fact that most men remember the “Hello boys” Wonderbra advert indicates how distracting roadside adverts can be. Some will be more distracting than others and some will be placed where the effect is particularly significant.

“They all add to the clutter pulling your visual attention away from the road and adding to the information you need to process as you drive along,” he added.

A report has called for stricter enforcement of a ban on cyclists riding a long a stretch of the South Bank.

As reported by Road.cc, the London Borough of Lambeth commissioned a report which has resulted in a draft cycling strategy that suggests the ban should be enforced more firmly with the use of signs and other measures.

“Opinions volunteered were fairly evenly divided between local residents and their representatives who wish to see cycling on the riverside prohibited and London-wide cyclists who wish to see it permitted,” said the report’s authors. “The River Walk is not a designated cycle route and private landowners in the study area recommended that a ban on cycling in this location be enforced.”

The draft strategy suggests that, if no enforcement support can be agreed with police, landowners should support the council in implementing a signage plan which would encourage cyclists away from the River Walk onto a nearby designated cycle route.

The authors were representing businesses and organisations including the British Film Institute, Guy & St Thomas’ Hospital Foundation Trust, ITV and Shell. It was suggested that these, and other landowners, should “support enforcement of a no cycling rule on the River Walk between Oxo Tower Wharf and London Eye.

“With the Mayor’s cycle hire scheme and cycle superhighways being launched, an increasing drive towards sustainable travel, and rising cycle theft, it should represent part of an ongoing conversation with key stakeholders about how to deliver services to encourage people to take to their bikes,” said councillor Nigel Haselden, Lambeth’s deputy cabinet member for sustainability and transport.

With excitement for the 2012 Olympic Games building ever higher with each passing day, the residents of the nation’s capital are preparing for a four week celebration that will see a huge number of event signs, banners and posters decorate building’s and streets around London.

According to the London Evening Standard, hundreds of parties, concerts, events and similar spectacles will take place across the city throughout the Games and in the build up to the international sporting extravaganza. Huge events have been planned, from spectacular light shows at famous landmarks to live musical performances on the Thames.

During the events themselves, those unable to attend the games in person will be able to view the competition at several massive venues throughout the city. In addition to a 40,000 capacity viewing venue in Hackney and a site for 6,000 people near City Hall there will be locations at Jubilee Gardens and Kings Cross, as well as a huge 60,000 multi-screen venue in the middle of Hyde Park.

Yet these centrally organised celebrations are just the tip of the iceberg. Over the next two years, the Evening Standard says that companies, organisations and individuals based in London will be encouraged to host their own parties.

Enthusiasm for the landmark sporting event was evident earlier this week, as London Mayor Boris Johnson and Sebastian Coe, the London 2012 chairman, launched the official two-year countdown for the event. Mayor Johnson told Britons to start making their plans for a unique celebration.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Coe said: “There are two years to go until the Olympic Games begin and we want everyone to start planning their once in a lifetime experience in 2012.”

Keep Britain tidy has been forced to defend their latest adverts after campaigners labelled it ‘childish and immature.’

Whilst many will see the funny side of the campaigns image of four posteriors, below large format printing advising consumers to ‘bend over and think of England- pick up litter and bin it!’ the Plain English Campaign is not a fan.

Spokeswoman for the campaign Marie Claire, told Wigan Today: “Do they think we all have filthy minds? Maybe we should start a Keep It Clean campaign for them.

“We have received some complaints from the public about the messages being inappropriate, particularly for an audience of young people,” she said.

Keep Britain Tidy is an environmental charity as well as England’s anti-litter campaign. Their new campaign design is based on the style of 1970s seaside postcards and features outdoors and on the sides of buses.

The second part of the campaign is titled ‘Get behind us’ and localises the effort to tackle the country’s litter problem. The campaign will appeal more to local communities, with posters saying ‘Get behind Essex’ for example.

Phil Barton, Chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy said it wasn’t the posters that were obscene, but the £858 million spent clearing litter.

“These posters are a colourful, tongue in cheek play on those 1970s seaside postcards. They are designed to raise a smile but, at the same time, there is a serious underlying message about the problem of litter, which we know, from our research, people care deeply about,” he said.

A lamp-post in London containing parking restrictions has been labelled Britain’s most confusing street sign.

With no less that six panelled signs on the lamp-post, both motorists and parking wardens alike have been left baffled trying to decipher exactly what the sign says.

The signs include a match and event information line and instructions for paying by phone, in addition to no loading and the regular parking restriction signs.

Film director Justin Edgar, spent half an hour explaining to a parking warden that he had legally parked his car outside his home, after receiving a £120 fine.

Although the warden from Islington Council admitted he was wrong, Mr Edgar was still fined, despite having a valid £180 annual permit for residents, displayed in his car. He told the Daily Express that the signage was ‘the most confusing parking sign in Britain’.

Mr Edgar’s road is close to the Emirates stadium of Arsenal football club, which means there are strict parking restrictions in place on match days. It becomes even more confusing as resident parking bays are located next to metered spaces.

A spokesman from Islington Council apologised for the error and told the Daily Mail that they would refund Mr Edgar’s money.

“We’ve cancelled the ticket and apologised for the inconvenience. We have no wish to issue a ticket unfairly. The signage is accurate but having listened to Mr Edgar’s common sense observations we are reviewing what we can do to make it clearer so this doesn’t happen again,”the spokesman said.

A man in Alberta, Canada, is auctioning 40 film posters he found in his house which date back to the days of silent cinema.

Blair Pitre came across the vintage posters two weeks after he moved into the property, back in 2007. Some of the posters date back as far as the late 1920s and early 1930s, advertising films starring the era’s luminaries such as Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Bela Lugosi and Warner Oland.

In total, Mr Pitre said he found around 360 posters and film title cards in the property, which had all likely been displayed in the local movie house at some point over the past century. One of the theatre’s previous owners had also at one time owned Mr Pitre’s house.

“It’s kind of neat to find actually. I knew it was kind of cool because the pictures and the colour, everything was very vibrant still,” the 39 year old construction worker told The Globe and Mail.

One of the rarest and most valuable posters in the collection is one advertising the 1929 movie The 13th Chair. The film featured Lugosi in a supporting role, two years before he made this hit film Dracula.

Grey Smith of Heritage Auction Galleries has valued the poster at approximately $5,000. A insert and title card for the film Anna Christie which starred Greta Garbo in her first talking picture could also net Mr Pitre $5,000.

“Vintage movie posters are really very desirable,” Mr Smith said. He told The Globe and Mail that the title and star of the film, along with the poster’s images and rarity are what make a poster collectible, which will be of interest to those working in poster printing and design.

Mr Smith estimates that Mr Pitre could fetch $50,000 for his posters at the auction. Mr Pitre said any money raised would be used to renovate his home.
